How to Make a Tequila Sunrise
The Tequila Sunrise is simple, visual, and far better when treated seriously than most bartenders give it credit for. Tequila, orange juice, grenadine, ice. The drink succeeds when it stays bright and cold and the grenadine gives color plus a little richness without turning the whole glass sticky. The look is part of the appeal, but the flavor still has to hold up.
Ingredients
Blanco tequila keeps the drink clean and peppery. It should be noticeable even with the orange juice in play.
Fresh orange juice makes the drink brighter and less candy-like. Bottled can work in a pinch, but it shows.
Good grenadine adds pomegranate depth. Cheap grenadine adds red sugar water. That difference matters here.
Instructions
- 1
Fill a highball glass with ice.
Fill with enough ice to keep the orange juice from warming quickly.
- 2
Pour in tequila and orange juice.
Stir the tequila and juice before the grenadine goes in so the base is already integrated.
- 3
Stir.
Pour grenadine slowly down the side for the sunrise effect. Once it is in, hands off.
- 4
Slowly pour grenadine down the side of the glass; it will sink and then rise slowly, creating a sunrise effect.
Orange slice and cherry are classic because the drink is supposed to look festive.
- 5
Do not stir.
- 6
Garnish with an orange slice and cherry.
Bartender Tips
- ★Do not overdo the grenadine. The color should impress more than the sweetness does.
- ★A drier tequila makes this drink feel more intentional.
- ★This is a good bridge drink for guests easing into tequila cocktails.
Variations
Mezcal Sunrise
Use mezcal for smoke and a slightly more adult version of the same visual build.
Vodka Sunrise
Possible if tequila is not the guest's thing, but less interesting.
Sparkling Sunrise
Top with a little sparkling wine or soda for a lighter, more brunch-friendly riff.
Why It Keeps Selling
The Tequila Sunrise survives because it is recognizable, colorful, and easy to enjoy. It occupies the same territory as beach drinks and resort orders, but with a simpler build that works in almost any venue. Not every classic has to be austere to deserve respect.
